Syd Barrett: (asked if he was satisfied with ‘The Madcap Laughs’) Yes, I liked what came out, only it was released far too long after it was done. I wanted it to be a whole thing that people would listen to all the way through with everything related and balanced, the tempos and moods offsetting each other, and I hope that’s what it sounds like, I’ve got it at home, but I don’t listen to it much now.

I think it’s good if a song has more than one meaning. Maybe that kind of song can reach far more people.

Yeah, well he was my friend, you know? We were friends and we were – when I was 17 and he was 15 or 15-and-a-half, I’m a bit older than him–we kind of shared that dream together. And he was extraordinarily creative and full of life before he became ill. And those of us who survived in Pink Floyd owe him a lot because he provided that original flicker of creativity and…well, flicker of creativity, which was so important in the beginning. I mean maybe in the beginning I provided something as well. I mean I provided some kind of push, but Syd provided that initial spark and I think he certainly showed me what was possible if you were prepared to take the risk.
